Used by the AV for ‘entrails’ (NRSV, Exod. 29:13) and the seat of truth (Ps. 51:6) or of wickedness (Ps. 5:9, which NRSV renders ‘hearts’). Jesus used the word (Luke 11:39) of the invisible evil disposition of the Pharisees.
